How the topics were chosen
Every prompt here was written for this site rather than copied from the lists that circulate online, and each one was checked against three rules. It has to be answerable by an ordinary adult in one to two minutes with no research. It has to invite a story, a stance or a vivid picture rather than a fact. And it has to be safe for a room of strangers: no partisan politics, no religion, nothing that assumes a particular country, income or family.
Each topic is tagged easy, medium or hard. Easy prompts are concrete and personal, so a nervous speaker can start immediately. Medium prompts ask for a position or a few organized points. Hard prompts are abstract or need real invention, and they are where experienced speakers go to get uncomfortable again.
The generator on the home page draws from all of these and avoids repeating a prompt you have already seen. The Quickfire Topics page does the same with a two-minute timer and no preparation.
